  • Before you go, let us dance one last time as the house in front of us plays ballads, two people rocking like a buoy, the neighbor too old to open his eyes but young enough to sing along to it. I have realized that I like my body when it's next to yours when we wear each other's clothes, ones which contain dreams of me making myself, a soft and pliant body with calloused hands and an exposed throat. I have realized they don't grow humans on trees anymore like in the olden days, with emotions so permeable they waft in the air along with the eyelash on my cheek after an asked-for wish. Before you go we should run into the eye of a storm and dance to the buzzing of air while being joined by pairs of birds, (a half-pieced ark if you will.) Before you go I want to press myself to your right shoulder, after we are erased and redrawn in bright colors, some of it spilling out of our skin. We should put ourselves in the sink and wash each other's hair while discussing the climax to the movie we saw during lunch and talk about the summer when we dreamt of broken teeth that spill onto a broken bed and the red light signs at the motel we ran to, jumping in the pool the moment we saw it (I want us to run towards it again)ALT
The first time I saw you we were bodies with broken mouths and fangs that looked like they came straight from a Halloween decorations store. Half-transformed like a cheap werewolf looking for the nearest bar, with a knife in its hands and a cardboard sign that says "Tear me apart" to each passerby. Our hands settle down after a windy night, searching for each crevice and collarbone. My fingers wrestle for space by the femur, a new memory resurfacing each time they move. Before you go I want to wash our mouths of red and cut you a bowl of fruits, ones that try running away from our open mouths while sounds of the shrill cooker float in from the insides. I wish to be the guttural scream you let out when we drop from the highest part of the rollercoaster and land on the front porch of your house with a handful of snacks. I want to always wake up to a singular sight, you making breakfast for us while I sit on the kitchen counter, my feet dangling over the edge. I just want for us to dance, our feet gliding through the house and creaky floors with walls of cobwebs. I just want us to dance even when the world falls apart around us — S.R.ALT

  • got held up on the way to work today because there was a big snake trying to sun herself on the highway right on the way out of town & the lady in the grey subaru in front of me put her warning lights on & got out to try & shoo her into the grassy sunny verge on the other roadside. & it was afternoon and busy but the logging trucks stopped & waited & the family cars stopped & waited & the long haul truckers stopped & waited for that snake to cross the road. nobody so much as honked. & when the snake was safe the road was backed up in both directions but a fellow in a pickup truck waved at me to go ahead (i was waiting to turn right onto the highway) even though he could have made me wait until the whole long line of cars passed. what i am trying to say is: there is still love in this world. what i am trying to say is: happy pride to me & to that big old bull snake who will live to see another sunrise & to every person on that highway who decided that saving her was worth five minutes of delay
